Go Green, Vote Blue!

By Bridget McAdam

Almost four years ago, President Bush made some pretty heavy claims concerning his administration’s environmental policy. Amidst worries of falling standards and EPA regulations, Bush claimed that he was in fact “a good steward of the land” and that both air and water quality across the country had vastly improved (Borenstein Commondreams.org). But did you know that during the past eight years of the Bush administration “cleanups of toxic waste fell by 52 percent”? Or how about the fact that the “number of beach closings rose by 26 percent” due to polluted waters? Even using Bush logic, it’s hard to see how these figures add up to improved air and water quality!

IT'S TIME TO TURN MISSISSIPPI BLUE

By Adrian King

Now that the primary season is over, it’s time to shift our attention to the race for the White House. While it may be hard for some of us, we must set our convictions aside and focus on the goal to get the Democratic nominee elected. Barack Obama has won the nomination, and with our support, he will be able to cross another historic milestone.
Speaking of history, Mississippi has voted Republican since 1968 with the exception of Jimmy Carter’s win in 1976. For far too long, we’ve been feeling blue in a red state. Clearly, it is time for a change. Barack Obama has promised us “change we can believe in”. It’s up to us to make sure he gets the opportunity to fulfill his promise. In the coming months, I’m asking that you help us, MUW College Democrats, create our own history. With your support, for the first time in a long time, we will turn Mississippi blue!

Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and senators and congressmen and government officials, but the voters of this country.
